Straw buyer and money mule

Also known as: Straw buyer · Straw borrower · Money mule · Nominee

Someone who appears formally as the buyer, borrower or account holder while another party is the real beneficiary — used to separate risk, or dirty money, from whoever actually carries it.

A relationship graph ties the presented record to 3 prior cases of the same shape, before approval.

Two US terms cover the same role. A straw buyer takes out the car loan, the lease or the mortgage for someone who could not qualify or does not want to be seen. A money mule, in the Justice Department's words, is a person who, at someone else's direction, receives and moves money obtained from victims of fraud. Some know exactly what they are doing; others are recruited through fake jobs or romance scams — and DOJ notes that even unwitting mules can face action.

Either way it is a problem of ownership, not of records. The file is usually correct: the person exists, the documents check out, the credit may be good. What is untrue is that the contract or the account is theirs. Traditional verification confirms that the holder is who they claim to be — the wrong question. The right one is whether the holder is who will use the asset or the money.

The signal shows up in the incoherence between the declared holder and the behavior observed afterwards, and in the connections tying that record to earlier operations of the same shape.

Frequently asked questions

What is a money mule?

A person who receives and moves money on someone else's behalf, where the money came from fraud or other crime. Mules are often recruited through fake job offers or online relationships, and they can face legal consequences even if they did not know the funds were stolen.

Is being a straw buyer illegal?

Buying for someone else is not illegal in itself, but lying to a lender about who the real buyer is, who will use the vehicle or property, or whose income supports the loan is fraud and can be prosecuted under federal and state law.
