The limit of traditional tracking is that it is reactive. It locates the vehicle after someone notices the theft and calls it in — and the first hours, precisely the ones that matter most for recovery, are already gone. Behavioral reading moves the starting line: patterns that precede theft — a period without signal, a route toward a port, use outside normal hours — fire an alert before the police report. Consent is the legal hinge. State laws differ, but California's is typical of the approach: it prohibits using an electronic tracking device to determine a person's location, except where the vehicle's registered owner, lessor or lessee has consented. Is it legal to put a GPS tracker on a car?
On a vehicle you own, lease or lend with the driver's disclosed consent, generally yes. Tracking a vehicle, and so a person, without the owner's or lessee's consent is illegal in several states, including California under Penal Code section 637.7. Rules vary by state.
Does a GPS tracker lower car insurance?
Sometimes. Some insurers discount anti-theft and recovery devices, and usage-based programs price on telematics data. The discount depends on the insurer and the state.
